Physical therapy is primarily associated with the promotion of mobility, movement, strength and quality of life. Spine physical therapy is performed to treat back, neck and many other spine related problems. Some of these include:

  • Herniated & Bulging Disc

This problem can be caused by an injury to the spine or by age. An injury to the spine can force the nucleus or a gel-like substance to come out thorough cracks or tears.  This causes the discs to bulge, break into pieces, or break open. When people grow old, spinal discs often become dry and restrict their flexibility.

  • Low Back Pain

Lower back pain is generally caused by strain, overuse, age, or an injury. Depending on the severity and cause, this pain can be sharp or burning. It can be dispersed over a wide area or can be localized, and take place suddenly or gradually.

  •  Lumbar And Cervical Spinal Stenosis

Lumbar Spinal Stenosis is the narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower back, and Cervical Spinal Stenosis causes the narrowing of spine in the neck. Lumbar Stenosis can cause weakness, numbness, or pain in legs, buttocks, and feet, whereas Cervical Stenosis causes pain, numbness, or stiffness in the necks, arms as well as legs.

  • Degenerative Disc Disease

It is not actually a disease, but is used to describe normal changes that take place in spinal discs due to age. It can occur anywhere in the spine, but generally takes place in the neck and the lower back. Some of the symptoms of degenerative disc disease include neck and back pain, but they vary from individuals to individuals.

Often times people who suffer from these spine conditions might be recommended to physical therapy to relieve their pain.  Spine physical therapy  focuses on both passive and active treatments including stretching, strengthening the muscles and low impact exercise.
